Living with Disabilities: Traveling Issues

Traveling is supposed to be a time of relaxation and enjoyment, but planning a trip or a vacation can be a headache! For those living with disabilities, traveling plans take on a much heightened importance. Individuals living with disabilities must consider every aspect of their trip, plan carefully and pay attention to detail. Specifically, disabled individuals and individuals living with medical illnesses must be concerned with all aspects of their trip, including transportation, dining and lodging.

Transportation

Transportation is a key issue for any traveler, but for a traveler living with disabilities, transportation takes on an entirely new issue. Whether the destination at hand requires a bus ride or a flight across the Atlantic, disabled individuals must take extra care when organizing their transportation. The best way to do this is by planning ahead and letting the bus organization or the airline know that he or she is disabled and what specific needs to be aware of. In addition to this, any equipment that a disabled individual must bring should be disclosed ahead of time if possible, including wheelchairs and walkers, or medicines, syringes and other medical devices.

Dining

In addition to transportation, many individuals with disabilities have special food needs. Diabetics, for example, must take extreme care of their blood glucose levels. In order to do this, they may need to carry snacks, hard candy or glucose tablets aboard a plane in case of sugar lows. Special accommodations can be made for the in-flight dinners that are served to help the individual maintain level blood glucose.

Lodging

Lodging is also of concern to individuals who are living with disabilities. Those with wheelchairs must ensure that their rooms are wheelchair accessible. In addition to this, there are specific accommodations also made for the hearing impaired. These include physical and visual triggers that alert the individual of sounds such as a phone ringing, the fire bell or an alarm clock going off.

Forge Ahead

Disabilities should never be the reason that an individual resists traveling. The United States government has instituted many organizations and codes to ensure the equal treatment of those with disabilities. Careful planning and organization can make traveling with a disability as stress free as possible.
